The birthstone for the month of February, amethyst has been considered a prized gem for centuries.
A favorite among royals, bishops and saints, the word amethyst derives from the Greek word amethustos, meaning sober. It was said that wearing amethyst could prevent a person from getting excessively drunk and would keep the wearer's mind still and sober.
Throughout history, amethyst was thought to have many different attributes -- all of them good -- including controlling evil thoughts, strengthen intelligence, protect from contagious diseases, encourage calm, bravery and contemplation and to bring forth the highest and purest aspirations of human kind.
This exquisite 10k gold ring features a collet set faceted oval cut amethyst measuring 14mm x 11.5mm in the most beautiful shade of purple. Engraved into the center of the stone is a stylized design inlaid in gold and set with nine cultured seed pearls. The pattern is almost giving us an overly stylized fleur de lis vibe.
Inlaid amethyst rings were popular in the late 1800s. However, most of them were engraved with a rose of Sharon -- a popular symbol of love. We have been unable to find a similar design to this one.

Amethyst has surface scratches and a few nicks in the top of the stone (noticeable under magnification). Gold foiling has a few tiny spots missing (also only noticeable under magnification). There is a nick in the gold just above one of the shoulders. Pearls have been replaced. Despite all of that, it is still a beautiful ring with a lot of life left!
Cleaning and Care
Pearls are very porous. Do not submerge them into any sort of harsh chemicals as it will ruin them. Clean very gently with warm soap and water and a soft bristled brush. Take special care not to scrub the gold inlay. Dry thoroughly. Lightly polish with a jewelry polishing cloth, if needed. We highly recommend that you remove this ring prior to washing your hands.
