It is believed by followers of the Catholic church to anoint oneself in sacramental Holy Water is to invoke God's blessing, which is why fonts, such as this, have become a staple in many Catholic households.
However, you don't have to be religious to enjoy the beauty of this piece!
Hailing from France, this exquisite holy water font was hand crafted in marble with a slight green hue reminiscent of green alabaster. It adds just the perfect amount of antiqued warmth to the piece.
Adhered to the marble is a glass receptacle for water and a large brass dove holding a cross in its mouth.
In Christianity, the dove and the cross both symbolize salvation. The distinction between the two is that the dove represents God's love in the Old Testament whereas the cross symbolizes God's love in the New Testament. Together, they span the entirety of the Bible.
The marble slab is backed in a solid brass sheet with two side loops. which keep the French metal bullion cord and tassels in place for proper mounting on the wall.
This truly is a lovely piece of religious history.
