Adored by Romans and ancient Egyptians and executed to perfection by the great masters of the Renaissance, niello is the perfect blend of artistry and alchemy.
Niello is a blackening technique commonly applied to silver to create a beautiful, high contrast effect. The recipes for this technique have evolved over the centuries. However, the most modern concoction involves mixing molten silver and copper together before adding molten lead and ground sulfur. The amount of sulfur added dictates the depth and tone of the black coloring.
For this stunning piece, the silver locket and chain would have been etched with this incredible geometric design before having the niello applied almost like an enamel. From there, the piece would have been fired in an oven before being cleaning and polished into this wonderful high shine. It truly is a masterpiece!
