Victorian "Tillie" Hidden Hair Memorial Ring

Now all but forgotten, the art of wearing mourning jewelry was once a common practice for hundreds of years. Popular in the time before photography, mourning jewelry was created to serve as a keepsake to remember a lost loved one.

Many pieces would include a lock of the deceased's hair or, later, their photograph.

What we love most about this unusual little ring is that it is harboring a secret! To the everyday admirer, this ring may look like a simple 9k gold band belonging to Tillie, whose name is engraved on the shield.

However, hidden within a secret compartment on each side of the band is a lock of dear, sweet Tillie's woven hair. Inside the band the date, "April 29th 1882," is engraved, which is most likely the day Tillie departed this life.

These hidden hair rings were not as popular as other hair/mourning pieces of the time, which make this one a real treat!

Since wearing jewelry made of hair was considered quite fashionable, most of the pieces we see are quite obviously made of hair. There was no denying it! They wanted it to be seen and noticed.

Personally, we think there's something sweet and almost romantic about keeping the hair hidden. It's a personal connection that only two people share.

Additional Details
Date: 1880s
Materials: 9k/low10k gold, human hair
Size: 6.75
Markings: Engraved "April 29th 1882"
Condition: Very Good
This ring came to us in a very neglected state. We have cleaned and polished it to the best of our ability. One of the side covers is slightly off kilter. It does fit securely into place when closed but angles up slightly. The hair on one side does have some dust that we could not remove due to the delicate nature. Unfortunately, the previous owner had left the ring sides open for years, allowing dust and debris to accumulate. We recommend keeping the side covers closed when not wearing the piece.
Cleaning and Care
Using extreme care and a light touch, polish metal with a soft jeweler's cloth, if necessary. Do not submerge in water.
