“Do not let the past disturb you, just leave everything in the Sacred Heart and begin again with joy.”
-- St. Teresa of Calcutta
The Sacred Heart of the Virgin Mary symbolizes Mary's divine love and compassion for humanity. Marked with the initials MA, this heart is surrounded by gold rays representing divine light as well as floral border symbolizing holiness and purity.
Made by nuns in 19th century France, this exquisite religious relic features a silk puffy heart wrapped in an metallic gold embroidered crown of thorns and adorned with a cross at the top. It is framed with another ring of thorns and backed with inky black velvet. The devotion is secured within a metal and tin frame and encased in domed glass. This piece is unusually large compared to most we have seen.
Hailing from the Latin phrase ex-voto suscepto, meaning "from the vow made," ex-votos are often worn or carried as devotional items as well as to give thanks for answered prayers and wishes.
Additional Details

Materials: Silk, metal, glass
Measurements: 6.75" x 7.75"
Markings: None
Condition: Good.
Frame has a few nicks. It looks as though this piece may have received a lot of direct sun in its long life, which has faded the colors of the heart, however we think it adds to its beauty. Some dust has gotten into the frame, but due to the way it is framed there is no way to remove it without destroying the piece. We did re-cover the back to prevent further dust from entering.
