While they may have gotten their start holding the alchemical secrets to cure what ails you, French apothecary jars are forever an objet d'art in our book!
Made by E. Renault, a Parisian manufacturer specializing in high-quality apothecary jars and other pharmaceutical porcelain products, this beautifully decorated jar once contained plumbum ustum -- also known as burnt lead.
While no longer utilized because of its heavy metal toxicity, plumbum was used in the Victorian era in topical salves and ointments, as well as in medicated plasters to treat burns, skin ulcers, abscesses and other chronic sores.
This beautiful jar has clearly had a storied life. We believe it may have been in the process of becoming a lamp when we rescued it. It has a hole drilled into the bottom and the knob on the lid has been replaced with an antique porcelain drawer pull.
Whether you decide to transform it into a lamp or put it on your shelf, this gorgeous jar still has a lot of life left!
