Made by E. Renault, a Parisian manufacturer specializing in high-quality apothecary jars and other pharmaceutical porcelain products, this beautifully decorated jar once contained pulvis sabinae compositus -- also known as powder of savin (juniper).
While no longer utilized because of its high toxicity, sabinae was used in the Victorian era in topical ointments to treat venereal warts and skin lesions. It was also a toxic uterine stimulant and was taken to "bring on the menses" and to terminate unwanted pregnancies.
This beautiful jar has clearly had a storied life. We believe it may have been in the process of becoming a lamp when we rescued it. It has a hole drilled into the bottom and the knob on the lid has been replaced with an antique porcelain drawer pull.
Whether you decide to transform it into a lamp or put it on your shelf, this gorgeous jar still has a lot of life left!

As mentioned in the description, the jar does have a hole in the bottom and the original handle has been replaced with an antique drawer knob. Jar also has some minor chips and paint loss, which is not uncommon considering its age and original use. Still a lovely piece.
