When you think of medical instruments, what comes to mind? Perhaps something simple and utilitarian, that's all function and no form.
While that may be the case for our modern-day tools, for Victorians aesthetics were almost as important as function.
At first glance, this may look like a miniature statue or a small piece of art, but they were once an integral tool in a midwife's arsenal.
Fashioned in 830 silver, this umbilical clamp is fashioned in the shape of a stork with a snake curled around it and resting on its head -- as a symbol of transformation, healing and renewal.
When opened, hidden under each wing is a small swaddled baby.
This clamp perches upright on its little bird feet, making it a wonderful display piece.

Condition: Very Good
At one time, the lower jaw would have had transverse notches to hold the cord tightly, but that piece of silver has sadly come off and caused a slight ripple in the bottom portion of the beak. The beak is still complete, it is just missing an inner layer. The hinge is a little loose from years of use, but is still solid. We do not recommend using these clamps as originally intended. This piece should be considered for display only.

Clean with warm soapy water and polish with a polishing cloth if desired.
