1917 Independant Order of the Odd Fellows Past Grand Pin

Along with the Freemasons, the Odd Fellows are considered one of the oldest fraternal organizations in the world.  Created in a time where social services were non-existent, the Odd Fellows dedicated themselves to charity, helping the poor and sick.  It is the aim of members to "to improve and elevate every person to a higher, nobler plane; to extend sympathy and aid to those in need, making their burdens lighter, relieving the darkness of despair; to war against vice in every form, and to be a great moral power and influence for the good of humanity."

This highly decorative pin would have been presented to a member after completing his stint as Noble Grand. The Noble Grand serves as the official representative of the lodge to outside persons and other organizations (and is most likely in charge of a bevy or secret tasks we will never know about!)

This pin is silver plated and features a wonderful array of Odd Fellow symbolism. The three chain links at the top represent friendship, love and truth. The enameled heart and hand symbolize cheerful giving and benevolence to those in need.

What makes this piece special is that it is engraved on the back to the person it was presented to. It reads: "Presented to Bro. Hughlett P.G by Lodge IOOF Jany 1917 No. 124 Hampden"

A great piece for any Odd Fellows collector.

Additional Details
Date: 1917
Materials: Base metal, silver plate, enamel
Measurements: 2.5" x 2"
Markings: None, just the dedication script mentioned in the description
Condition: Very Good
The front of the pin is almost picture perfect with just the tiniest bit of damage to the enamel heart. The back of the piece has a few small spots of tarnish and plating loss. Fortunately, not on the script area.
Cleaning and Care
Because of the enamel, we do not recommend submerging this piece in any harsh cleaning chemicals. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and polish if needed.
