Georgian Silesian Iron Wire Work Floral Swag Brooch

The forgotten ancestor to the better known Berlin iron, Silesian iron dates back to the latter part of the 18th century.

Originating in Gleiwitz, Silesia -- which today lies in Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic -- Silesian iron is composed of thin strands of black or grey iron wire finely woven into a delicate mesh that is then twisted and shaped into beautiful designs.

The result is so stunning and so intricate that you almost can't believe it is made of metal!

This exquisite brooch is shaped to resemble a floral swag with sprigs of berries. It has a large floral centerpiece with 4 smaller tulips surrounding it. Inside each tulip blossom is a tiny cut steel paillette.

Sadly, Silesian jewelry was short lived and production ceased in the early 1800s. Given the nature of of iron and its tendency to oxidize and rust, not many Silesian iron pieces have survived, so this brooch is a rare treat.
