"Fond and Tender Mother
We are parted for a time
But again we hope to join thee
In those realms of bliss divine."
A touching tribute to a loved one lost, mourning or memorial cards were an important part of the Victorian mourning process.
Made of a thick card stock like paper and intricately die cut and embossed, these 3" x 4.5" black-and-white cards featured varying symbols of mourning -- such as weeping women, angels and gravestones.
These striking, yet haunting cards were often sent to friends and family after the funeral to serve as a tangible memento for the dearly departed.
This beautifully framed card pays tribute to Mary Peel (Bagley Marsh), who departed this Earthly realm Feb. 18, 1867, at the age of 68.
