Amand Durand After Albrecht Dürer "St Jerome in His Study" Heliogravure

In the mid 1800s Amand Durand saw a need to preserve Old Master engravings and woodcuts.  He was able to do this by perfecting the Heliogravure technique.  This technique used photographic processes to etch the images onto copper which could subsequently be printed essentially making an exact copy of the original engraving.  Durand's reproductions were so successful that he was sought out by the Louvre and tasked with restoring old and worn engravings.  Today, collectors consider Durand's reproductions works of art themselves and are highly sought after by collectors.

This copper engraving is entitled "St Jerome in His Study" and was originally printed by Albrecht Dürer in 1514.  Saint Jerome was a priest who was best known for translating the Bible into latin.  Saint Jerome is seated in a study with a dog, lion, and skull.  This print is intricately detailed and crisp.  It is printed on hand made mold and deckle paper with visible wire marks in the sheet.  Durands signature red stamp is on the back of the print.

This print has been framed in a new walnut frame with acid free mat board and UV resistant plexiglass to help protect the piece.
