Georgian Halley's Comet Brooch

Since the dawn of time, man has looked to the cosmos with wonder, fear and delight. From shooting stars to eclipses; meteor showers to the northern lights, there's never a shortage of reasons to gaze at the night sky. But just what is it about space and the unknown that piques our curiosity? 

The answer may be different for each of us, but one thing I think we all can agree on is that these celestial events are often a pretty incredible sight to behold! Even our ancestors thought so. 

For the past 2,000 years, Earth has been lucky enough to be graced by a famous extraterrestrial visitor, Halley's comet. 

First documented in 240 BC by Chinese astronomers, it wasn't until 1759 when this glowing guest earned its official moniker -- after British royal astronomer, Sir Edmond Halley, who was the first to predict that the comet would return to the Earth's solar system roughly every 75 years. 

So when the newly-named Halley's Comet appeared in the night sky in 1835, people were elated and made special comet themed jewelry to commemorate and celebrate the occasion. And that's what we have here. 

Fashioned in 14k yellow gold, this otherworldly brooch features a clear, cushion cut paste -- to represent the comet -- and a short ornamental metalwork "tail."
