Originating in ancient Rome and Greece, monograms were utilized as symbols of power and royal authority. Initially used on coins, tombs and stamps, monograms have gone through quite the transformation over the centuries.
In the Middle Ages, monograms were often used to mark personal belongings to prevent theft. And by the Renaissance era, royals, such as Anne Boleyn, began wearing them in jewelry to denote their lineage and status.
Monogrammed jewelry continued to rise in popularity in the 19th century, however, what once denoted royalty and power was now a sentimental token of love. Personalized items, such as lockets, brooches and rings were often gifted as a symbol of affection or to mark a celebratory occasion.
This striking ring is a wonderful example of monogrammed jewelry of the Victorian era. Handcrafted in 10k yellow gold, this piece features an onyx centerpiece with an Old English "J" in the center.
