“Hair is at once the most delicate and lasting of our materials and survives us like love. It is so light, so gentle, so escaping from the idea of death, that, with a lock of hair belonging to a child or friend, we may almost look to to Heaven and compare notes with angelic nature, may almost say: ‘I have a piece of thee here, not unworthy of thy being now.’" – Godley’s Lady’s Book, 1860
This beautiful Victorian brooch serves to preserve the memory of Ms. Eliza Hocking, who departed this earthly realm July 24, 1884 at the age of 66.
It is gold filled and features beautiful inky black enamel with an ornate gold scrollwork frame. Painted on the enamel in gold are the words "In Memory Of."
Perfectly placed under the glass centerpiece is a lovely coiled arrangement of Eliza's plaited brown hair -- serving as a sweet, yet heartbreaking keepsake of a lost loved one.
The back of the brooch is engraved with Eliza's name, the date of her passing and her age.
