The aesthetic movement was born in the latter part of the nineteenth century as a way to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Revolution and to challenge overbearing and conservative Victorian traditions.
An intellectual as well as an artistic movement, aestheticism championed pure beauty and 'art for art's sake' by emphasizing the visual and sensual qualities of art and design over practical, political, moral or social considerations.
Popular motifs of the movement included sunflowers, peacock feathers, storks, lilies, paisley, flowers, leaves, Japanese forms, insects, butterflies and birds.
This grand sterling silver locket is the epitome of art, beauty and aestheticism. Its dimensional design features a repoussé garden with the word "Regard" scrolled across the center of the piece in raised letters.
During the Georgian and Victorian eras, sentimental jewelry featuring the word, "Regard," were used as tokens of affection and love.
The simple, 6-letter word forms part of the phrase, “I highly REGARD you” or "With my REGARDs," letting your betrothed know that they have your heart.
Necklace comes on a new 18" sterling chain.

Locket has light surface scratches consistent with age and use. The back of the locket has a few tiny dings and dents, which is also not uncommon in these thinner silver pieces. There is a small piece of original lining fabric inside the locket that is tattered. While we did clean this piece we chose not to polish it because the aged patina accentuated the lettering, which we thought added to the piece. Locket closes securely and the hinge is in good working order.
Cleaning and Care
Remove any photos or fabric and clean gently with warm soap and water and a soft bristled brush. Lightly polish with a jewelry polishing cloth, if desired.
