One of the oldest materials used in the creation of jewelry, coral has been a prized gemstone for more than 25,000 years.
Many ancient civilizations as well as members of Victorian society believed that coral had amulet powers to promote good health and to protect a person from danger or magic spells. This belief was especially pertinent with regard to children, which is why you often see coral incorporated into a number of children's jewelry pieces during 19th century -- and why this particular piece is so bittersweet.
Finely crafted in 800 silver, this breathtaking puffed heart pendant is encrusted in delicate angel skin pink pave coral on the front.
Turn it to the back, and you will see the faded face of a young boy gazing out from behind glass. Tucked inside the heart and hidden by the portrait is a small lock of the young child's hair. His memory protected for all eternity.
This piece is as haunting as it is beautiful.
Chain is not included.
Materials: 800 silver, coral, glass, paper, hair
Measurements: Heart: 1" x 3/4" x 1/4" Bail drop: 1/2"
Condition: Very Good
Looking inside the bail, it looks like this piece may have had a gold vermeil wash at one point in its life, but it has all worn off and is just brilliant silver. There are a couple of tiny dark pits on the back of the piece that did not hand polish. Due to the porous nature of the coral, we could not give this piece a deep cleaning.
Cleaning and Care
Gently wipe with a soft damp cloth if needed and dry thoroughly. Do not submerge coral into any harsh chemical cleaners. It will ruin it. Polish silver with a jeweler's cloth to shine.
