Owls are majestic and magical creatures. However, in many cultures they have traditionally been associated with a darker, more witchy side and were once thought to symbolize bad omens and death.

Thankfully, that malevolent perception changed during the Victorian era when owls began to make their way into children's nursery rhymes.

Soon, these beautiful birds were everywhere (particularly in the Arts and Crafts movement) -- adorning lamps and andirons, decorating library buildings and, of course, popping up in jewelry. Many Victorians wore owls as a symbol of wisdom and protection.

However, this particular pairing of the owl and the crescent moon takes the magic up a level, as both are believed to have supernatural powers.

In the 19th century, crescent moons in jewelry often represented the glorification of the feminine moon goddess, Selene, and symbolized female empowerment. Crescent moons also represented change -- just as the moon cycles through phases, so does life.

This powerful symbol was especially meaningful as empowered women began to abandon their traditional roles and started entering the workforce during the Industrial Revolution.

Magic, mystery, ancient wisdom, unbridled female empowerment, what more could you ask for?

This fantastic hair pin looks to be handmade using highly detailed brass stampings, most likely from France.

It features a 3-dimensional owl, holding an upturned crescent moon in its beak. The piece is designed to dangle and move freely when worn.

We honestly have been unable to find anything even remotely like it. It may have been part of a costume given that it is more about looks than function and the craftsmanship is definitely "good enough for stage."

Still, it is a pretty spectacular piece!

Additional Details
Date: 1880s-1900s
Materials: Brass
Measurements: Hairpin length: 5 1/8" Owl: 1 3/8" x 1 6/8"
Markings: None
Condition: Very Good
This piece has a beautiful antiqued patina that we chose to keep. The piece itself is in great shape. Any flaws were made in the original construction. The mouth was cut rather haphazardly and the beak of the owl doesn't quite go into the hole in the moon that it is supposed to. We did try to gently reposition it, but the weld is very strong and it will not budge, so it will have to remain perfectly imperfect.
Cleaning and Care
Clean gently with warm soap and water and a soft bristled brush. Lightly polish with a jewelry polishing cloth, if needed.
