Popular in the mid to late Victorian era, human hair wreaths were created for a variety of reasons.
While most were a touching tribute to memorialize the dearly departed, hairwork also was used for sentimental reasons as a way to celebrate friendship, family and love.
This spectacular wreath features hair in many tones from brown and auburn to blonde and gray. Centered is a photograph of six women who appear to be in a boudoir. Perhaps the hair belongs to the ladies featured in the photograph? Their photograph is framed in a beautifully braided rope of hair.
Unfortunately, it does not have any information about who it might have belonged to or whether it is a memorial or sentimental piece, so we will just have to appreciate it as the work of art that it is.
The wreath is stitched into a Victorian Setsnug underwear box, a collectible piece in itself! There is a metal wire for hanging.
