Contrary to popular belief, the use of butterfly wings in jewelry did not originate in the late Victorian era as some surmise.
In fact, it wasn't until the 1924 British Empire Exhibition when jeweler Thomas L. Mott showcased his delicate butterfly wing creations that this lepidoptera craze took flight.
Prized for its stunning metallic blue-black iridescence, the Morpho butterfly was the jeweler's wing of choice. Native to South America, these beautiful creatures were transported to England and raised on farms for the sole purpose of jewelry production (a practice that still takes place today in a slightly more ethical sense).
One look at this stunning brooch and it is easy to see how one could get enchanted by its beauty. The way the wing shimmers in the light is almost hypnotic.
This lovely piece is fashioned in 14k yellow gold and features a tiny Pygmy butterfly resting on a shimmering blue Morpho butterfly wing.

Cleaning and Care
Although it is encased in glass, the wing is still subject to moisture and water damage. Do not immerse pendant into water or cleaning solution. Store in a cool dry place. Polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth if needed.
