Art Nouveau Egyptian Revival Brass Scarab and Glass Necklace

Throughout history, humankind has had a recurring fascination -- some may say obsession -- with all things Egyptian.

From the discovery of the Rosetta Stone during Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign to Howard Carter's finding of King Tut's tomb, each historic event reignites the spark of Egyptomania and in turn we see a resurgence of Egyptian Revival jewelry.

Around the turn of the 20th century, there were a number of notable Egyptian discoveries. Edward Ayrton unearthed several royal and non-royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Ludwig Borchardt found the now famous bust of Nefertiti in1912, just to name a few.

We believe that this wonderful necklace is a product of the Egyptian Revival period following these early 20th century discoveries. It features an exquisite brass stylized art nouveau winged scarab centerpiece accented with heavy opaque green glass beads.

Commonly used as amulets in ancient Egypt, scarabs are considered to be a reflection the heavenly cycle, and represent rebirth or regeneration.

This necklace also has magnificent brass filigree beads with intricate, stylized cutouts of Egyptian papyrus and lotus flowers -- also ancient symbols of life and rebirth.
