Deadstock Edwardian "Our Darling" Child's Casket Handle

Infant mortality rates were alarmingly high during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Poor health care and living conditions, a lack of nutrition and sanitation as well as dangerous levels of environmental pollution -- thanks to the Industrial Revolution -- are all thought to be contributing factors to the tragic demise of many young children. 

While funerals were often a common occurrence during the era, the care and attention to detail of these somber events was anything but ordinary. 

This highly decorative casket handle is an excellent example of the time and effort put into the minute details.

This beautiful piece was made by Sargent and Co. in New Haven, Connecticut and was patented on Feb. 17, 1914. It was most likely ordered from a catalog as Sargent and Co. offered a number of funerary items in its hardware catalogs. This piece is deadstock and has never been used. 

We think this would make a great drawer pull or even a fun necklace holder. 

It is a 2-piece design meaning that the handle is separate form the back plate. It must be screwed into something to keep the handle in place. Screws are not included.
