We are excited to have Victorian mourning culture historian, Emily Rose, here to share her extensive knowledge with us!
Emily will take us on a journey through the ins and outs of Victorian mourning customs -- from veiling mirrors to stopping clocks, post-mortem photography to funeral biscuits, professional mourners, hair jewelry and more!
Talk will take place Friday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
The lecture will take place in our shop, located at 209 N. 3rd St., Richmond, VA 23219. There is free street parking after 6 p.m. and all attendees will have the opportunity to shop following the discussion.

About the Speaker
Emily has spent nearly a decade studying Victorian mourning culture. She earned her Master’s degree in Art History from George Mason University in 2023, where she developed specialized expertise in Victorian Mourning Material Culture. Her Master’s thesis, “Reviving Mourning Culture: Status in Victorian Mourning Material Culture and Its Resurgence,” has contributed to ongoing scholarly discussions in the field.
In addition to her academic work, Emily brings over six years of experience as a collector, through which she has deepened her research on the role of status and the social significance of mourning artifacts in the Victorian era. Her work explores how mourning material culture both reflected and shaped social identity within 19th century society.
