A symbol of beauty, transformation and the soul, butterflies have long been used as a metaphor for personal growth and spiritual rebirth.

In many cultures, butterflies have become synonymous with hope and freedom as well as love and happiness.

It's no surprise that they have been a popular jewelry motif for centuries.

This exquisite brooch was handcrafted around the turn of the century by esteemed jewelry makers Bailey Banks and Biddle.

First opening their doors in 1832, Bailey Banks and Biddle is America's oldest jeweler. Their pieces have been worn by everyone from presidents to astronauts. However, some of their most notable designs may surprise you.

While they are often considered the leader in jewelry fashion, they also had great success as medal designers and have designed everything from the Great Seal of the United States to the Purple Heart and from the Medal of Honor to the mortuary medal for President Abraham Lincoln's hearse. They truly have made their mark in history.

While this brooch is less historic, it is still quite beautiful. Crafted in 10k yellow gold, this beautiful butterfly is bejeweled with 7 fiery opals, dozens of delicate seed pearls and two sparkling ruby eyes.

In addition to being a brooch, this piece also has a watch hook on the back allowing you to dangle a watch, charm, locket or anything your heart desires.

Additional Details
Date: 1900s
Materials: 10k gold, opals, pearls, rubies, base metal
Measurements: 1 3/8" x 1"
Markings: BBB for Bailey Banks and Biddle
Condition: Very Good
The original pin has been replaced with a gold plated base metal pin. The rest is all original. This piece is very difficult to clean and it came to us a real mess! We have cleaned and polished it to the best of our ability but there are some slightly darker areas near the tips of the wings. They are not as dark as they appear in these photos, but it is slightly noticeable in person.
Cleaning and Care
Clean gently with warm soap and water and a soft bristled brush. Do not submerge into any harsh chemicals or jewelry cleaner as it will ruin both the pearls and the opals. Polish with a jewelry cleaning cloth.
