This striking celluloid box is the perfect place to hide away secrets, store keepsakes or even house your budding antique jewelry collection.

As was customary for a number of trinket and jewelry boxes of the time, this box is constructed out of papier-mâché and then coated in ivory celluloid.

The celluloid is beautifully embossed with three-dimensional anemone and forget-me-not flowers as well as decorative scroll work on the sides.

The inside of the box is lined in blush colored silk and has some ribbon and brad loop detailing inside the lid, which originally may have been intended to hold a manicure set.

Additional Details
Date: 1890s
Materials: Papier-mâché, celluloid, silk and brass
Measurements: 5 3/4" x 4" x 2 3/8"
Markings: None
Condition: Very Good
There are some small chips in the celluloid along the edges of the box and a few light scuffs from use. The inside silk is stained but still intact and the ribbon loop detailing has hardened. The original latch hinge pin has been replaced with a small brass tack nail, but still functions as intended.
Cleaning and Care
Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly, if needed. Celluloid is a flammable material and should be kept away from heat sources, including window ledges, and out of direct sun.
