When Italian archeologist Alessandro Francois discovered an ancient Etruscan tomb in Italy in 1857, he introduced the world to a wonderment of magnificent gold work the likes which had not been seen since the 4th century BCE.

Though not much is known about this ancient civilization, the treasures unearthed by Francois forever changed the world of jewelry.

Images of intricately wrought ancient golden jewelry with delicate filigree work and colorful gems captivated the imagination of Victorians and energized many nineteenth-century jewelers to create their own inspired pieces.

Skilled jewelry artisans began incorporating 2,000-year-old Etruscan techniques such as granulation, filigree and scrolled wire work and repoussé into their designs -- and with that, the Etruscan Revival period was born.

Crafted in a 14k yellow gold with a high karat wash, this beautiful pendant is choc full of delicate detailing encircling a striking blood red garnet cabochon.

This piece looks to be a conversion from a brooch to a pendant, which we think makes it a lot more wearable.

Pendant comes on a new gold filled chain.

Additional Details
Date: 1870s
Materials: 14k gold, garnet
Measurements: Pendant: 1" x 3/4" Chain: 18"
Markings: None, gold content verified by a certified GIA gemologist
Condition: Very Good
There are a few light surface scratches consistent with age and use. They are only visible under magnification. The garnet has a couple of fissures under the surface. This could have occurred when the original stone was cut or sometime later in its life. There is no way to tell. Again, it is only noticeable with magnification and not when worn. It does not affect the integrity of the stone.
Cleaning and Care
To preserve and maintain the high karat wash, we recommend gently wiping with a slightly damp cotton ball and patting dry with a soft cloth if needed.
