Do you have a foolish heart? Or are you just a fool for love? Or maybe you believe that only fools fall in love. Whichever the case, have we got a necklace for you!
This delightful and demure heart is handcrafted in the highly coveted Whitby jet and wrapped in a thin yellow 9k gold wire. Positioned in the center of the heart is a dazzling piece of pyrite, aka "Fool's gold," perhaps as a symbol of being a fool at heart? Or a fool in love? We will leave the interpretation up to you!
Rising in popularity in the 1830s, Whitby jet is a semi-precious organic gemstone formed over millions of year from the fossilized wood of the Araucaria tree (today known as the Monkey Puzzle tree).
While many people categorize jet jewelry as mourning jewelry, that is not always the case. While it is true that jet -- especially the matte variety -- was frequently used in a number of Victorian mourning jewelry pieces, it also was considered quite trendy and fashionable for the time.
This dazzling necklace is a prime example of just how à la mode jet can be!
Date: 1900s Materials: Whitby jet, pyrite, 9k gold Pendant Measurements: 5/8" x 5/8" without bail Chain Length: 18" Markings: Heart: None, Chain marked 1/20th 12k gf Condition: Very Good Whitby jet is a delicate stone and is prone to scratches, nicks and cracking if improperly handled or cared for. Heart has light surface scratches and pitting, which is not uncommon given its age. It is more visible in the close-up photos than it is to the naked eye. When worn, someone would be hard pressed to see these flaws.
Always keep your jet separate from other jewelry to prevent it from getting scratched. It can be cleaned using mild detergent and warm water. Wiping gently with baby oil on a piece of cotton wool will restore the shine.
