Widely used in antique jewelry, doublets are a type of assembled gem designed to imitate other, more expensive or fragile gems. This particular doublet is a garnet and glass doublet, which is made by fusing a clear garnet on top of ruby red glass.
Garnet and glass doublets were first used in the 1850s when it was noted that molten glass would adhere to garnet. It was a popular imitation for all types of colorful gems because the color of the glass was the only color that could be seen. Garnet and glass doublets were still being utilized in the early 1900s until actual synthetic gems were invented.
